I made this “warts and all” illustration of British heavy metal legend, Lemmy Kilmister in order to convince my friends at SXSWorld Magazine that they need to hire me to punctuate their article photos with an occasional drawing or two.

Here’s another sample of my perennial attempts to use Adobe Illustrator drag Adobe Illustrator kicking and screaming to make a painterly style of illustration.
It’s not the first time Mr. T or the Predator have made their way into one of my drawings and probably not the last. I fear as I get older my childhood influences grow more profound. Years ago I thought would be funny to make a comic where B.A. Baracus gets separated from his platoon (Hanibal and the gang, I guess) while on patrol in the waining days of the Vietnam War and ends up having to confront a Predator alien while trying to help some refugee kids. Who knows? With the way Hollywood keeps recycling my 80′s child hood for big bucks it will probably end up a major motion picture directed by Micheal Bay and staring a C.G.I. puppet as young Mr. T.
I pity the fool who has to watch that movie.
Anyways, I also posted my preliminary pencil sketch morphing into vector line art so that the nice Russian girl that keeps spamming me can get an idea of how my graphite drawing gets translated into complicated vector art.

Every year I volunteer for the SXSW music, film and interactive conference so that I can participate without having to pay for it. I’m cheap like that. The 10 day festival has nearly 12,000 attendees with venues that span the entirety of downtown Austin, Texas. Aside from the conference staff, several thousand volunteers are needed for the whole operation to run smoothly. Those volunteers all wear identical shirts so that participants can easily identify them.
This year the SXSW staff decided to have a design contest for the volunteer shirt and I took a crack at it.
The contest rules stipulated that only three colors (not including the shirt) could be used and the design must somehow reflect the 25th anniversary of SXSW. After that anything goes.
My design, “VolunDEER In The Headlights” won!
I had a second submission, “SXSW 4 Life” which apparently resonated with the SXSW staff because they have decided to use that design for a SXSW employee shirt.

I was honored that my design was chosen and I can’t wait to see it forcefully adorned by tons of people on the streets of my hometown.

I haven’t posted a drawing in a while so I decided to put up this homage to Vargas style pin up art. She is an example of my continuing efforts to use Adobe Illustrator more like a painting tool.

I made some Punch Design skateboard decks for an art show at my favorite local watering hole, The Parlor. The show invited artists to decorate blank boards and display them. Skate culture is always producing interesting graphics and there where a lot of really cool designs at the show. I was short on time so I recycled existing illustrations, but when I get the opportunity I plan to make some skateboard specific illustrations that use the shape of the deck better.
I just finished this trashy promo poster of one of the super villians/love interests in my upcoming web comic. I thought I would post it. Let the Red Lobster jokes commence.

It’s important to me as an illustrator that I take jobs that challenge me conceptually. I was recently asked to illustrate a pair of lips fashioned out of coal with an electrical cord jutting out of the mouth that alluded to the famous Rolling Stones logo and to 70′s rock n’ roll in general. I accepted the job for the reason that I had no idea what that should look like. Illustration is a strange vocation because there is no school degree, or sanctioning body to help distinguish the professionals from the amateurs. I think that accepting and completing jobs where the actual execution strategy is not obvious is an important quality that separates the dabblers from the true commercial artists. Plus it expands your mind, man-oh wait I think mind expansion was the 60′s.

I recently did an illustration of an avatar for a friend. My goal was to try to visually emulate the look of an airbrushed portrait using Adobe Illustrator. Here are a few pictures showing the stages of the drawing.
